Guidelines

Each campus must respond. Cal Poly will make a single response via the president and provost, and Gary Lever has asked that the you all as members of the QR Learning Community represent the faculty in crafting this response.

A preliminary evaluation of the report suggests that, because of the selectivity of Cal Poly admissions, the recommendations may have little impact on the university. Nevertheless, it is worth considering the major recommendations, partly because they reflect changes being made to primary and secondary education as a result of the Common Core, partly because of our own recent experience in the assessment of QR skills. The recommendations include the following changes to CSU admissions standards:

• Not requiring a second year of algebra, which is not a prerequisite to many college majors.
• Requiring four years of math/quantitative reasoning taken in multiple paths:
• The traditional STEM-preparatory combination of algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus.
• A statistics-oriented path, which would be appropriate for students applying to programs in business or the social sciences.
• A new QR path including an as-yet-to-be designed fourth-year QR course.
These changes are meant to create greater alignment between requirements at the high school, community college, and university levels, as you will see explained in the report.

I hope you will want to participate in this discussion on Tuesday, January 17 from 3 to 4, as we are to seek the approval of the president and provost and then respond to the CSU by February 6.
