Course Learning Objectives

The use of learning objectives or outcomes encourages students to be intentional and reflective of their own learning. The course proposal form asks faculty to provide a list of Course Learning Objectives (CLOs) aligned to the Program Learning Objectives (PLOs). During program review, all Cal Poly programs are then asked to evaluate the alignment of their PLOs to the University Learning Objectives (ULOs).

As such, all courses are to have CLOs that are approved by faculty and aligned to the PLOs. Furthermore, faculty are to communicate CLOs to students via the syllabus or other means appropriate to the course.

Academic Senate Resolution: AS-739-12 "Resolution on Course Learning Objectives" (PDF).  Adopted 10 January 2012.

  • This resolution called for CLOs to be published along with other course information in the Cal Poly Academic Catalog. However, as of July 2023, they have not been published in this way.
